Abstract:

When being anywhere near a person infected with COVID-19 is considered hazardous, there are groups of people who risk their lives as they burn the deceased. During the second wave of COVID-19, burial grounds of every city were overwhelmed with large numbers of deceased victims. This unexpected massive increase has drastically heightened the amount of work that falls on the shoulders of crematorium and burial ground staff. It also exposed them to a devastating environment. Crematorium and burial ground workers in India live on the margins of society. Workers in several crematoriums and burial grounds are 3rd - 6th generation workers. This paper would examine the challenges faced by women who work in the burial ground.
