Abstract This paper contends that early Bengali children’s literature drew from English literary conventions while carving a distinct identity. It proposes that Bengali juvenile literature was distancing itself from its colonial origins and was shedding the ‘civilising’ intentions of the past. To substantiate the argument, the paper looks at a few adaptations published in one of the early Bengali children’s periodicals, Sandesh.
