Abstract:

The fifth circuit bench of the Bombay High Court in Kolhapur is set to become operational from 18th August 2025, as announced by Chief Justice Alok Aradhe with the approval of the Governor. The establishment of the circuit bench is not only a significant step for the judiciary but can also act as a catalyst for local social and economic development. Kolhapur district, known for its historical, cultural, and industrial significance, will benefit greatly from the availability of legal services at the local level due to the bench's establishment. This facility is expected to increase employment opportunities in areas such as law, judicial staff, and allied service sectors. Additionally, it will provide a boost to businesses like lodging, food services, stationery, travel, and more. This research presents an in-depth study of Kolhapur’s historical background, its current economic situation, and the potential changes anticipated from this development. In conclusion, the circuit bench concept could play a vital role in the overall economic growth of a progressive district like Kolhapur. This bench will provide judicial facilities to six districts — Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, Solapur, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg — thereby reducing the travel burden and expenses for legal professionals.
