Abstract:

Library and Information Science (LIS) in India represents a continuous and dynamic process of knowledge preservation, organization, dissemination, and use, deeply rooted in the country’s cultural and intellectual traditions. From ancient centers of learning and manuscript libraries to contemporary digital repositories and networked information systems, LIS in India has evolved in response to social, educational, and technological changes. This article provides an in-depth analysis of the development of LIS in India from past to present and explores future perspectives in the context of emerging technologies and global information trends. It examines historical foundations, the impact of colonial rule, the contributions of pioneers like S. R. Ranganathan, the growth of LIS education, professional practices, national information initiatives, and current challenges. The paper further discusses future opportunities related to artificial intelligence, open access, digital preservation, data management, and community-oriented library services. By presenting a comprehensive overview, the article emphasizes the enduring relevance of LIS in India and highlights the need for policy support, professional skill development, and technological adaptability to strengthen the role of libraries in national development.
