Abstract:

Essentially, Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory is a transformed version of the concept of the five sheaths (Panchakosha) described in the Taittiriya Upanishad. There is no significant difference in the substance of both; it is only the terminology that has been altered to give it a new form. Maslow describes needs in a descending order and outlines five levels. Similarly, the Panchakosha concept also describes five levels. As a person fulfills their needs, they progress through these levels sequentially. This is essentially the same concept in the Panchakosha framework. The fundamental difference is that Maslow views it under human motivation, while the Panchakosha concept is considered under personal development.
